SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California prison officials have sent layoff notices to 545 employees, including 140 guards, as the inmate population declines to comply with a federal court order.
Corrections officials said Friday there are 14,000 fewer inmates than four months ago, when a new law began sending those convicted of lower-level offenses to county jails instead of state prisons.
Federal judges, in an order backed by the U.S. Supreme Court, gave the state two years to reduce its prison population by 33,000 inmates to improve medical care. The population peaked at 162,000 in 2006.
The layoffs will take effect Feb. 29, although some of those affected can transfer to other prisons that have vacancies.
Another round of layoffs is planned this fall. Officials could not say how many notices will go out then.

I got mine with 4 years In, but someone with one year down the street from CIM didn't. Lol! Lol! Lol! Lol! Wow! Does that make sense?????? Nah, it doesn't.
ReplyDeleteOur union signed off on the way this process is taking place. If it was done by seniority straight across the board up and down the state we would not have nothing to complain about but its not. Where do I sign up to stop my union deductions?
ReplyDeleteI cant believe how our union just sits on their thumbs while this unfair layoff takes place. Someone with 4 years gets a layoff letter while another person with 1 year (down the street) gets 15 overtimes a month? Makes no sense to me! Another question is with all these layoffs how does the Executive Counsel plan on paying for all their law suits? Less officers = Less $$. Yet these Leaders of ours in Sac still got votes from our local chapter knowing this was going to happen, I hope we have a total make over at our local level and that transcends up in headquarters those bums need to go..... Thanks a lot MJ!
ReplyDeleteI think we have a class action lawsuits on our hands boys!!
ReplyDeleteJust a little note to those of us for the layoff. I spoke to personnel today and they advised that the only things they are not cashing out any furloughs, plp, or sick time. She advis if you have them to use them. otherwise your out of luck. SO those of us with large furlough time may just lose them. at least they could take you out before screwing us.
ReplyDeleteIf they will not cash out your furloughs, then you guys need to file a lawsuit. It is against labor laws. You MUST be compensated for time worked!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat four round Two......bendover....
