Surprise Suprise

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Rodney King's death in June was the result of accidental drowning, although alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and PCP found in his system were contributing factors, authorities said Thursday.

King, whose beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 was caught on camera and sparked riots after the acquittal of the four officers involved, was found dead in the swimming pool at his Rialto, California, home on June 17, authorities and his fiancee said. He was 47.

King was "in a state of drug and alcohol-induced delirium" and "either fell or jumped into the swimming pool," said the autopsy report released by the San Bernardino County coroner Thursday

  1. Whatever mr kings problems were he is a hero to our community. He stood up at a time when laps could do whatever they wanted to us with no reppercussions. Had it not been for people like Rodney king, Geronimo Pratt, rosa parks and the rest I would have never had the opportunities I've had. They stood up while being beat down. And I respect that

  2. Did you know that most of the money Rodney King got from his lawsuit went to crack cocaine. He admitted that on a VH1 show.
I am just stating a fact.

  8. Putting Rodney King in the same breath with Geronimo Ji-Jaga and the respectable Rosa Parks is criminal. I get your point, but Rodney King was garbage. If he was a law abiding citizen and got beat down then he could be seen as a hero for his community.

  10. It's a proven fact that mr king never had a drug problem before the beating he received at the hands of the lapd. After that beating he started using drugs to self medicate for his physical and mental injuries. We just discussed this at my church and I have all the facts if you care to hear it call me in twr 5. 3. Pretty ignorant statement Roberts. What, you feel threatened if an officer and an inmate speak the same slang? Does that mean they are on the same side suddenly? Then, am I supposed to be nervous if I hear a hispanic CO having a conversation with inmates in spanish or spanglish...does that mean he's relating to that inmate? Of course not. Even inmates who talk the same slang will throw blows at eachother in a heartbeat...so slang doesn't signify some kind of alliance. There's definitely NEVER excuse for fist bumping at all. But just because officer/inmates have cultural similaraities doesn't mean the officer is sympathetic any more than it means the inmate is an informant. And for you to say "most" shows you are way over-generalizing. I have worked shifts where it was all black officers and have yet to see a black officer bump fists with an inmate. I've seen one inmate bump fists EVER, but I wont say his race because his race doesn't matter -> it doesn't mean that all his people do it. And most of the black officers I've talked agree that black inmates are the most annoying to deal with, because not only is there no structure or control, but they also have the mentality that we black officers owe them something.

And the Fullerton shooting was a perfect example of people gettign outraged when a white guy was the victim of police excessive force. So your last sentence is not fact.

It's surprising to read the post made by Officer Ivory regarding this scumbag. Rodney King had a drug problem before he got his ass whopped and continued his addiction thereafter. Public record indicates that Rodney King had numerous arrests for soliciting prostitution and narcotic violations and that Officer Ivory, is the TRUTH. I think your "Oprression" is that you have been locked up in a tower for many years now and have totally lost your state of mind. Your right, Wake up America, If this is the mentality of one of your own can you imagine what inmates think about you. This is America, the home of the free and the home of the brave. Since it seems like you have so much anger, maybe you should retire and move to a country that houses others with your beliefs. I dont need to leave my name cause what I am telling you has nothing to do with Hate, it has to do with common sense and no color lines.

  21. @J ROBERTS although i don't agree with everything that was stated about
rodnedy king facts are this was and still is an ongoing issue within the "ghetto" communities. It's not a secret that police brutality was vivrant (urban dictionary). My point is that their was some long term trauma suffered from this incident which may have increased his need for his drug use. Not saying it's right but that's the choice he made.
And to answer your question if it was a white man no one would care you must seem to forget about what not to long ago happened in Fullerton.
People do care no matter the color of the person skin. Quit trying to come on this site and belittle your fellow officers. Not all "black officers" are sympathetic to black inmates that you stated. Since your writing a tell all book name the names of the officers you p.o.s. You couldn't wait to get away from CIM but yet your constantly here on this site. Goes to show that you have not life. If so prove me wrong; MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE. If it's so great up in the bay create a site where your fellow officers could learn to love your progressive thoughts. I still got love for you after all is said and done. 22. @ K. Ivory, I have also learned a few things in church. One being that each race is sacred in the sense that we are each a creation of the Creator.

I have also studied the example of Jesus Christ in regards to the implementation of love and truth. Well the majority of his life on earth consisted of love, he NEVER compromised the truth. Some of the Jews of those days that he came across, got a much bigger dose of truth than love. But as you know, with a complete willingness to disregard and bypass the Truth, they worked harder to see him executed and put Him on the cross.

Why? He told the whole truth as indicated in His story of the good Samaritan (a non-Jew), as well as MANY other truths.

Well I see one of the points that you are making,it should be be qualified with the whole truth of the matter in order for people to get a clearer perspective. As you have seen, that is NOT an easy thing to do, in a few words, on a running blog.

Well I am not of the same race of R.King, I could easily say the video was revealing. Would the officers on duty that day handled things the the same way if King was of another race? I could only come up with my own assumtions. But again, the truth is, if you ran from the law back in those days they were known to make you pay the price (any racisim involved only made it worse). Was it right to make a person pay the price like they did, No! there is a process in place for that already.

Whatever the case, this life is short and well I am of a certain race now, it will NOT be a factor come Judgement Day.

Thats one of the many reasons that I refuse to think like a racially charged and hate filled inmate, whatever the race.

    Just my thoughts.

  31. This whole post makes me sick. First we shouldn't even be wasting our time discussing Rodney King. However C.O. Ivory had to make one of the most disappointing comments I have heard in a while. To put the name Rodney King and attach the word "Hero" to it is mind numbing. See through the race factor already. Our community? What community? He was a criminal with a drug problem. Granted, he nor anyone else deserved to be beaten like Stacy Koon and the other lame ass LAPD officers did to him. I don't give two ratshits what race you are if you can't see Rodney King for what he was, you're a total and complete moron. Opinions are opinions, some are just dumber than others. 32. Just little FYI, Officer Culver actually pulled Rodney King out of the swimming pool that awful day. Officer Culver was jogging when he suddenly heard a loud commotion coming from a home (later identified as Rodney King's) as he was passing by. Officer Culver immediately responded to the home and knocked on the door as his past training as a Riverside Sheriff cadet kicked in. After several failed numerous attempts to make contact with someone, Officer Culver approached the back yard via an unsecured gate, and observed a woman in distress pointing towards the swimming pool. Officer Culver turned towards the pool and observed a shadowy figure in the pool motionless. He immediately removed his clothing and jumped into the freezing water risking his own life with the intent to help another human being in distress. Officer Culver managed to swim towards a safer area of the pool with the unknown body on his back. He then removed the motionless body from the water and placed him on a flat surface where he initiated first aid. No other information available.

Eventually everything will workout and the puzzle pieces will fall in place. Officer Culver is a great person, he's the type of person who will never forget where he comes from. I know that he's a little crazy and has many stories that are very hard to believe, but during times like these he is a perfect character to remember.

Just for the record, the above story is TRUE and accurate as possible as told by the man, the myth, the legend, Officer R. Culver.

  34. This is a HERO: Not Rodney King!

Sergeant Stacey Cornell Koon, the supervising officer at the arrest of Rodney King, wanted nothing so much as to be known as a good cop who did his job in a professional manner. Forty-one at the time of the King incident, Koon believed then--and continued to believe throughout his trials--that his actions may well have saved Rodney King's life. Looking back at March 3, 1991 many years later, Koon said, "I wouldn't change what happened one iota."
Koon was a well-respected fourteen-year veteran of the LAPD with a masters degree in criminology. In his years on the force, he earned over ninety commendations and just three reprimands. His courage was legendary. While working out of the tough South Central district, Koon once witnessed a black transvestite prostitute--who had been brought in for booking--fall over from an apparent heart attack. Even though AIDs was rampant in the area and the prostitute had symptomatic open mouth sores, Koon dropped to the floor and administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. (The prostitute did in fact have AIDS).

Fellow black officers considered Koon to be committed to racial equality. One black officer on the force said of him, "Stacey is a guy you can walk up to and he'll give you the shirt off his back." Koon once investigated a police brutality charge brought against a white officer by two black transients--a charge most officers might have let drop. He even angered many officers by ordering the accused officer to stand in a line-up for identification by the transients. (The officer was later found guilty of using excessive force.)

On the night of March 3, 1991, Koon ordered CHP officers to stand away. He said later he thought the CHP officers' use of drawn guns was "a lousy tactic." Instead, he twice tried tasing King. The ineffectiveness of the Taser convinced Koon that King was "dusted," or on the drug PCP. When the Taser and swarming King proved unsuccessful, Koon, according to one investigator, "looked around and saw a bunch of rookies--he tunneled in."

Koon may have won the case for the defense in the Simi Valley trial. Although Prosecutor Terry White thought Koon to be "an arrogant sonofabitch," he came across as a sincere witness who genuinely believed that the force used against King was managed and controlled. One of the most dramatic moments of the trial came when his attorney Daryll Mounger asked him what he was "thinking at the time you saw Melanie Singer approaching with a gun in her hand?" Koon fought back tears as he answered: "They show you a picture when you are in the Academy [taken] at the morgue, and it is four [highway patrol] officers in full uniform that are on a slab and they are dead, and it is the Newhall shooting."

At the federal trial, Koon revealed none of the emotions that came through in Simi Valley--and that might have sealed his fate. To some observers, he came across as cool or "cocky."

After his conviction in the federal trial, Koon served over two years in federal prison. Shortly before his parole in December of 1995, an unsuccessful attempt was made on his life.

  35. There is a perfect example aid the white majority rewriting history and filling in false anecdotes as evidence to justify their model of "how things went down". Let me boil it down super great but color blind white man with a history of always helping any minority he runs across runs across a crazy drug fueled monster who is less than human and this ONE time he HAD to savagely beat this "animal " because he didn't want all the masses of police standing around to be killed. 42. I'm not sure what's going on here on this blog but I would like everyone to know that I did not make any of these comments about Rodney King. Yesterday evening I landed in Atlanta where I was returning from a vacation in the Bahams, while on vacation I never went online and posted anything on this blog. I wish I knew who is claiming to be me and it would be great if Sgt Lopez would reply and condemn who has done this. However, that being said, I have a bigger problem, how in the world did a comment about Rodney King escalate to these vicious racist rants. Everyone of us has an opinion on many issues, and for some reason someone gave an opinion on how they felt about Rodney King. The responses however are horribe I cannot believe these are remarks of Professional Correctional Officers. Although its been 28 years since I attended the training academy in Galt, I have never strayed from this adage we are a team and as we know sometimes there will be issues that we may get angry with one another about but we are supposed to be better than the inmates. I only have one more year left in this department and I will move on into the sunset however, many of you still have years to go in this departement. How do you want to be remembered? This conversation started because of Rodney King, although we make fun of Rodney King, get beyond your racist attitudes, can we will all get along.
